Today at 1:00 p.m. ET the New York Jets (5-7) and their tandem of rookie quarterbacks will take the field at MetLife Stadium and run a professional-looking offense against the visiting Oakland Raiders (4-8) in an AFC clash that can be watched on CBS. Geno Smith has failed to throw a touchdown pass in his last five games at the helm of the Jets' offense, and was benched at halftime last week. Jets head coach Rex Ryan is sticking by the team's second round pick for one more week at least, though.
"Obviously, he's going through some rough times," Ryan said. "These last three games haven't been good for him. Quite honestly, it hasn't been good for a lot of us." Smith continues to say the right things, but can sense the organization and fan base tiring of his many mistakes.
"It seems like I say this every week, but there's always a way to get better and I've got plenty of room to improve," Smith said. "So I've just got to continue to plug at it and got to keep working."
Despite their putrid play, an AFC playoff berth is mathematically possible for Gang Green. Left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson said the team is aware of the standings, and will be playing with urgency.
"There's definitely a sense of urgency now," Ferguson told the team's website. "You recognize there are four games left and we recognize the challenge that's before us, but all we can do is just keep our heads down and grind right now and focus on our work."
