"Terry Funk is gone. I just talked to Terry's daughter, Brandee, who gave me the awful news. He was my mentor, my idol, one of the closest friends. He was the greatest wrestler I ever saw," Foley posted on his Twitter account.

"There will never be another like him. May God bless Terry, his friends, family and all who loved him. RIP my dear friend - it was an honor to know you. #RIPTerryFunk," the 58-year-old added.

Funk wrestled for 52 years, and his achievements include being the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) heavyweight champion in 1975 and Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) in 1993 and 1997.

The 79-year-old was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2009. Funk was also inducted into the International Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame two years ago, ESPN reported.

Funk had been dealing with several illnesses in the past years, including Parkinson's disease and dementia, aside from the aches and pains he collected from performing inside the square circle.

Foley and Funk in 1997 feud with the New Age Outlaws. One of the memorable highlights at the time was the two wrestling icons winning a Dumpster match against the New Age Outlaws at WrestleMania XIV, rewarding them with the WWF Tag Team Championship.

Unfortunately, that title reign was short-lived after Funk and Foley lost the titles to the Outlaws the following night on WWE Raw in a Steel Cage match.
