LeBron James is arguably the most important active basketball player in shoe giant Nike's roster of endorsers, which explains why many observers were surprised to hear news that the four-time league MVP and two-time NBA champion does not like his new shoes, the LeBron 11.
On Thursday, the Wall Street Journal reported that the Heat superstar has only worn his new shoes for two complete games this new season. ESPN.com, meanwhile, confirmed that James has been having problems with the fit of the shoes, forcing him to wear last year's model for most of the time. Nike, according to James, is redefining the shoe to fit his feet.
"I just want to be able to wear them," James was quoted by ESPN.com as saying. "It has been a frustrating process. But obviously, I know that Nike wants to do what's best. They're not going to put me out there in harm's way. "
Online message boards have been speculating on the real reason why James has hardly worn his new shoes, observing that he changes shoes in between quarters.
"I could wear them, but they don't feel as great as I want them to feel," James continued. "So we're redefining them, and I feel like this next round is going to be perfect."
Curiously, the new shoes are selling impressively compared to last year's model according to the Wall Street Journal. According to the said newspaper, the sales of the LeBron 11 are 18 percent better than last year at this time of the year. The new LeBron shoes retail for $200 and hit the stores last October.
