Amir Khan was scheduled to face Devon Alexander this month, before rumors he was next in line to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. surfaced and laid waste to those plans. Now, Khan will be in the same building as Alexander on December 7th, but as an announcer, while Alexander takes on Shawn Porter at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Paulie Malignaggi is the regular commentator for Showtime broadcasts, but in this case he's headlining the event against Zab Judah. Khan is known as a mouthy personality, so it seems fit that he'd take the mic in Paulie's stead.
"I'm really looking forward to working with Showtime on another top draw bill," said Khan. "The main event between Paulie and Zab will be a Brooklyn blockbuster with two of boxing's most skilled fighters. Having shared the ring with both men I know together they will bring speed, power, ring craft and heart to the table.
"Fighting in their own backyard, neither one of them will want to leave that ring the loser so it makes for an extremely intriguing matchup between two truly world class operators. The undercard is filled with some similarly great clashes, which could headline on their own. IBF world champion Devon Alexander versus Shawn Porter, Sakio Bika defending his WBC world title against the undefeated Anthony Dirrell and Austin Trout up against Erislandy Lara. These are the type of fights that can turn into edge-of-the-seat thrillers."
It is unclear what Khan's next move will be in terms of in-ring action though, as nothing has been clarified regarding Mayweather. Khan has been accused of ducking Alexander though; with the "Money" fight potentially on the table Khan is viewed as avoiding the risk of a loss.
"It's not true that I cancelled the fight because I did not want to face him, but the negotiations between our teams did not end with an agreement," Khan said. He also indicated weight was a sticking point in his talks with Devon Alexander.
"I agree it will be a disadvantage for me to a certain point, and on paper, as I have not fought a fight at this weight," he said. "I wanted to fight Devon Alexander this year. But I feel 147lbs or 154lbs is my natural weight."
