WWE superstar John Cena has been busy with his Hollywood career lately, playing starring roles in F9: The Fast Saga, his Peacemaker series and The Suicide Squad. Rumors are rife, however, that Cena will be making his grand return to the wrestling ring this coming August in SummerSlam with reports stating that he will face Universal Champion Roman Reigns in a mouth-watering title match.

It isn't a complete wonder why WWE might be pushing for John Cena to return after a nearly one and a half year absence. WrestleMania 37, usually WWE's biggest event of the year, was held with a reduced fan capacity last April with the COVID-19 pandemic still making large crowds an impossibility at that time. With the United States easing restrictions, though, WWE wants SummerSlam to be their biggest event of 2021.

Cena to headline SummerSlam at Allegiant Stadium?

Allegiant Stadium, the new home of the Las Vegas Raiders, has been chosen as the venue for this year's SummerSlam. This is the first time that this event will take place in an NFL stadium. According to Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer, Allegiant Stadium's current layout for SummerSlam can hold a seating capacity of just over 41,000 people with WWE already selling "a lot" of tickets during the pre-sale for this marquee event.

Driving interest in the event is the supposed return of John Cena. He last appeared in the WWE universe back in Wrestlemania 36, losing to "The Fiend" Bray Wyatt in the Firefly Fun House match. He has been teasing his return to the WWE lately, posting a picture of the WWE on his Instagram account and having an interesting back-and-forth conversation with NXT Champion Karrion Kross.

Cena has been busy with his acting commitments as he is currently filming the HBO Max series Peacemaker in Vancouver, Canada. Shooting for that series will end on July 6, though, and Cena's schedule will open up after that date. Interestingly, WWE will be having live events again soon with a 25-city tour starting on July 16th. And if reports are to be believed, John Cena will be appearing on that first live show of Friday Night Smackdown at Houston, Texas.

Cena vs Reigns

The possibilities are endless for Cena when it comes to his next opponent on the ring. All eyes, however, are on Roman Reigns as Cena's future opponent in the WWE. This is an intriguing matchup for wrestling fans, now that Reigns has gone heel under the tutelage of wrestling legend Paul Heyman. This matchup was rumored to take place in Wrestlemania 37 but busy schedules prevented the clash from pushing through.

That might have been for the best as Reigns' career has continued to flourish as a heel. It was in SummerSlam last year that Reigns made the stunning turn, attacking both Braun Strowman and Bray Wyatt following their Universal Championship title match. Five days later at Smackdown, Reigns completed his heel turn, forming a partnership with Paul Heyman that continues to this day. It's only fitting then that SummerSlam 2021 hosts Reigns' next big moment with 16-time champion John Cena a worthy adversary for the reigning Universal Champion.
