New York Knicks coach Mike Woodson has seen Jason Kidd's act before.
The New York Post reported Friday that Kidd's $50,000 fine for staging a drink spill to get an extra timeout triggered a Woodson flashback of a 2009 game between the Atlanta Hawks, whom he coached at the time, and the Dallas Mavericks, whom Kidd played for.
The Hawks led 97-95 when Kidd took the ball up the court on the sidelines where both team benches were located. Woodson was on the Atlanta sidelines, standing pretty close enough to the inbounds line that Kidd went over and bumped into him, acting as if Woodson was actually on the court.
Woodson received a technical, and the Mavericks ended up beating the Hawks that night. When the play occurred, video showed an irate Woodson yelling at Kidd and being restrained. At one point during the footage, Kidd pointed to his brain, and later he gave a little smirk.
"It was a smart move, but at the end of the day, when the contact occurred, I was out of bounds,'' Woodson told the Post. "It should've been our ball. It was a smart move. He changed the whole dynamics of the game.''
Carmelo Anthony said the cup incident demonstrates Kidd's feisty competitive spirit.
"That goes to show you what kind of person he is,'' Anthony said. "He'll do whatever he has to do to win. He protects his team.''
Woodson and Kidd later moved past the incident when Kidd became a member of the Knicks last season. He said the two teased each other about the bump when Kidd joined Woodson in New York.
No longer is Woodson the only one acutely aware of Kidd's antics.
