In 2010, LeBron James shocked the basketball world when he abandoned his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers to join Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami in pursuit of NBA titles, leaving the hard-luck Cavs brokenhearted.
Three years have passed and while the Cavs have built a promising young core centered on All-Star Kyrie Irving, many of its fans still dream that James will eventually come home after his contract with the Heat expires next summer.
A group of Cavs fans are among those dreaming of that scenario, and together they've raised $50,000 for billboards and T-shirts bearing the message "Come Home LeBron" that were passed around during the Heat's game against the Cavs in Cleveland. James, while not commenting on his free agency, said he was flattered by the fans' actions.
"It's very flattering," James told ESPN.com before his team dumped the Cavs, 95-84. "Anytime you have fans who appreciate the way you play, it's humbling."
The four-time league MVP remained mum on his free agency plans, saying: "I'm not talking about free agency right now. My only concern is winning a third championship."
ESPN.com also reports that last year, James indicated that he could envision himself being a Cavalier once again if "the circumstances worked out." This led some Cavs fans to believe that the Akron, Ohio native will leave Miami next year to join a young franchise and team up with Irving and a bunch of promising players.
However, the Cavs have their own problems right now that could diminish their chances of luring James away from the Heat. Cleveland has started out slow with a 4-11 win-loss record and internal squabbling has been ruining its team chemistry.
