Georges St. Pierre is one of the biggest stars in the UFC, and just retained his welterweight title in a brutal match against Johny "Big Rig" Hendricks. With a major name retaining a belt, it would stand to reason that UFC president Dana White would be pleased.
This is not the case; White went on record after the fight proclaiming the decision victory for GSP as incorrect, and bashed the Nevada State Athletic Commission's integrity. Even St. Pierre sounded despondent after the brutal war, and hinted at retirement.
"There was a lot of talk about what was going to happen [after this fight]," St-Pierre said. "I have a bunch of stuff in my life happening. I need to hang up my gloves for a little bit. I will make a point on that a little later, but for right now, I've got to go away for a little bit."
GSP's assertion that he will be taking some kind of extended leave has rankled White deeply, with the UFC president essentially offering St. Pierre an ultimatum: grant Hendricks a rematch in due time or retire and surrender the strap.
"You owe it to the fans, you owe it to that belt, you owe to this company and you owe it to Johny Hendricks to give him that opportunity to fight again, unless you're going to retire. There's no I'm going to go on a cruise, and I'm going to be gone for two years, and I'm going to take a hiatus. ...That's not how it works," White said on The Dan Le Batard Show according to Bleacherreport.com.
White wasn't finished either, intimating that retiring is GSP's call and something he wouldn't stand in the way of. "He doesn't owe anything. If he wants to retire, he can retire, said White. "But if you don't think that while he holds the belt and he still wants to stay in the sport that he has to step up and defend the title, you're crazy. He can retire and give up the belt."
