'The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild' News And Updates: Sequel May Already Be In The Works As Reviewers Give Perfect Scores

Nintendo may have made the best "The Legend of Zelda" game and maybe the best game of the year in "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild." "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" will release alongside the Nintendo Switch in a few days and talks of a sequel have already begun.

"The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" series producer Eiji Aonuma talks about the future of the series beyond the upcoming sequel. He explains that there are currently two teams developing "The Legend of Zelda" games according to an interview on Game Informer.

According to the producer, the team that develops 2D Zelda games like "The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds" wasn't busy developing "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild." This could mean that the producer is implying that the 2D Zelda team is already working on a new Zelda game.

"The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds" was released on the 3DS in 2013. The game was the first Zelda game that took a more open approach in its gameplay allowing players access to all the weapons and dungeons from the get go. It was also the same formula that "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" used and expanded.

Clearly, the result of the new approach was a huge success for "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild." Reviewers are in awe of the game with Polygon calling it the most vital Zelda game in two decades which is a clear reference to "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time." "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" got perfect scores from most of its reviewers which makes it a clear game of the year contender.

It's a much-needed success for Nintendo who has had failed opportunities such as the Wii U. "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" gives the Nintendo Switch a killer app that the Wii U desperately needed.

As for the new 2D Zelda game that the second team is developing, it would be wise for them to expand on their formula and maybe borrow some ideas from "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild." A direct portable sequel for "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" could also work as Nintendo have done in the past with Windwaker and the Phantom Hourglass.

With "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild", Nintendo has perfected the open-world western RPG gameplay. Now is the time to do it on a 2D portable scale which for Nintendo, is almost a sure thing.
