The NBA trade deadline is only several days away and big deals are expected to happen. DeMarcus Cousins, who is now part of the New Orleans Pelicans, is not expected to sign an extension. Here is the latest NBA rumor roundup with an update on the blockbuster Cousins trade, Iman Shumpert and more.
DeMarcus Cousins not signing extension
The Sacramento Kings broke their word when they traded Cousins to the Pelicans in exchange for Buddy Hield, Tyreke Evans, Langston Galloway and a 2017 first-round pick, per Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical. The Kings reportedly did not want to commit a five-year, $209 million contract to Cousins.
Despite the prospect of playing with Anthony Davis for the rest of his career, Cousins might not want to sign an extension to stay in New Orleans past next season. According to Marc Stein of ESPN, the All-Star center is not expected to sign an extension this summer, as pointed by out his agent Jarinn Akana.
Cousins is considered by many as the best big man in basketball at the moment. However, there are still questions if he can work well with Davis in New Orleans. He'll likely think about staying with the Pelicans if everything goes smoothly in the next one and a half season.
Timberwolves interested in Iman Shumpert
According to Sam Amico of Amico Hoops, the Timberwolves are interested in acquiring Shumpert from the Cleveland Cavaliers. Minnesota is looking for a replacement for Zach LaVine, who was ruled out of the season after suffering a torn ACL in his left knee.
The Timberwolves are also chasing a playoff spot that is why they are desperate to acquire a player like Shumpert. On the other hand, the Cavaliers need to make a deal to improve their depleted roster that is already without J.R. Smith and Kevin Love.
Hawks to be active at the trade deadline
Despite taking Paul Millsap off the trade block earlier this season and trading Korver to the Cavs, the Hawks are going to be active at the deadline, per Chris Vivlamore of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Some of the players the Hawks are looking to deal include Kris Humphries, Thabo Sefolosha and Tiago Splitter and Tim Hardaway Jr.
