Most boxing rumors these days revolve around Miguel Cotto's decision between middleweight Sergio Martinez and junior middleweight Canelo Alvarez, as Amir Khan vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. chatter has cooled.
While Khan is still believed to be a leading candidate as Mayweather's next foil, nothing appears imminent. Mayweather's camp has not been helpful in deciphering "The Money Team's" next movie either.
"How many times have you heard rumors in this business about things being done and it's not even close to the case?" Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather's adviser said. "It's the nature of the boxing business. I've heard Floyd is fighting Tim Bradley next. I heard a lot of things. We just sit back and laugh. It's hilarious."
t's great to be in a position where everyone wants to fight the king. He represents the biggest payday for any fighter out there if their number gets called. I can't blame them for speculation or rumors," Ellerbe said. "But we haven't had one conversation about any of that [about his next fight]. Floyd is relaxing and enjoying the time off. He is enjoying time with his family and marveling at the record-breaking year he has had."
In the absence of anything concrete, Khan has also been linked to Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero. Khan pulled out of a matchup with Devon Alexander to remain open for a May 5th date with Floyd, but will soon need to figure out an opponent if those hopes dry up.
Guerrero's team has denied any offers have been made by Khan's people, and his adviser Bob Santos believes Khan wants no part of The Ghost.
I've been getting a lot of calls about this, but there is 100% no truth that Robert Guerrero is going (to) fight Amir Khan. If Khan wants to fight Robert, we can make that fight tomorrow. I can tell you this, if Khan steps in the ring with Robert - he can forget about Mayweather because I am 100 percent confident that Robert will stop him."
Guerrero hasn't fought since losing to Mayweather early this year, and was accused of hiding from up-and-coming welterweight Keith "One-Time" Thurman.
"He was proposed the fight by Richard Schaefer, and he said 'No thanks.' I don't know what he's doing in his career right now. I just know that he didn't have a fight lined up," Thurman said. "He's a great fighter and I was hoping to step into the ring with one of the big names out there. But obviously, he's just another one that doesn't want to fight Keith Thurman."
