Ajax coach Frank de Boer has much to worry about heading into this clash, namely his side's minus-five goal differential through three Champions League matches; in addition he must be concerned with controlling a wild segment of Ajax's fans.
Some fans, whom de Boer labeled "crazy," were violent during a 2-1 Ajax win in Parkhead last month. Officials said those "instances of disorder" were taken care of. While du Boer criticized the acting out, he has been thankful of Ajax's strong support, and praised their volume when the two sides last met.
"There were moments when they made more noise than the Celtic fans did which was fantastic," de Boer said. When asked if he thinks this game will be played without incident, he didn't seem optimistic.
"I am confident in that but you never know," de Boer said. "There is always some crazy people (who) try to disturb something but hopefully it will not happen."
On the pitch, De Boer said Ajax needs a victory more than Celtic. "It is a crucial game for us. For them, a draw is maybe enough so they can wait more than they did in Glasgow. We have to force the game but we are in good shape to create chances and get the three points.''
Neil Lennon agrees with De Boer about the necessity of a good showing today. "We always knew that the double-header against Ajax would be pivotal and it has proved to be the case,'' he said. You don't know what is round the corner but what I would say is that on their day Ajax are as good as Barcelona and Milan."
