Following an impressive upset over Lucas Matthysse, Danny Garcia's future is somewhat in doubt. The winner of their September 14th clash was expected to get a shot at Floyd Mayweather Jr., but that does not seem to be the case.
On his end, Garcia and his vocal father and trainer Angel Garcia don't seem to be clamoring too much for the opportunity either. When asked how badly he wants to face "Money," Garcia responded humbly.
"I don't really care about it. I'm trying to build my own legacy. If it happens, it happens. If it don't, it don't. I'm going to just continue what I do and just keep winning."
When asked if he thinks he could take down the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Garcia had confidence. "It'll come down to who makes less mistakes. Floyd doesn't make a lot of mistakes. I'd be going against a seasoned veteran so it'd be a good fight but I got what it takes to beat anybody in this sport. If I felt like I couldn't beat people I wouldn't be a boxer."
While it's unclear who Garcia's next opponent will be, a rematch with Lucas Matthysse is highly unlikely. "I feel like I don't need a rematch because I was the champion," Garcia said.
"He wasn't the champion. He never won a world title. If he would've beaten me there would be a rematch because I was the champion. I don't got no interest in a rematch."
With much of the 140-lb. division taken care of, Garcia is eyeing a move up in weight to 147 lbs., where a plethora of interesting matchups can take place, even if Mayweather turns down the Philly fighter. One name that has cropped up is Adrien "The Problem" Broner, with whom Garcia is friendly.
Garcia thinks that too is unlikely. "At the end of the day, it's a business so any fight can be made," Garcia said. "As far as us fighting any time soon, I don't think it makes any sense. We're both building, it would be under-watched."
