Former Redskins defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth blasted Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan on a Tennessee radio show recently, going as far as to call the head coach "conniving" during the interview. Haynesworth was responding to comments made by former Redskins tight end Chris Cooley, who called him an "awful human being," and as Haynesworth responded to him he also had some barbs for Shanahan.
"I mean, it's like, you can't win with that team," Haynesworth said, via the DC Sports Bog about Shanahan's struggles with Washington this year. "And you think it was just me? I mean, look how he did Donovan [McNabb]. See what's going on with RGIII. I met RGIII. He seemed like an extremely nice guy that's willing to work."
Haynesworth continued: "Now he's gonna learn -- I mean, I hate to say he's gonna learn -- about Shanahan, how he's conniving and everything like that, where he's not gonna help him out, it's all about him."
Haynesworth also responded to Cooley's comments according to NFL.com, and said that Cooley "sounds as stupid as he looks," before ripping Shanahan and implying he hasn't found success since winning his second Super Bowl with John Elway and the Denver Broncos in 1998. When asked whether Washington will win a Super Bowl with Shanahan Haynesworth scoffed.
"Yeah, good luck with that," he said per NFL.com. "They're gonna run RGIII into the ground. They almost really hampered his career last year with the knee injury, putting him back in there. I mean, I think they ought to cut ties, let it go."
Robert Griffin III led the Redskins to their first division title since 1999 last year as the team finished 10-6 and clinched an NFC East crown before RGIII was re-injured in the first round playoff game that saw the Redskins lose to the Seattle Seahawks 24-14 in the divisional round. Griffin, who injured the knee earlier in the season before it reoccurred, had offseason knee surgery to repair ligament damage, but so far things haven't gone as smoothly for the quarterback in his sophomore season.
Washington is currently floundering at 2-5 in the NFC East but are just 1.5 games behind the Dallas Cowboys (4-4)
Griffin was 258-for-393 (65.6 percent) for 3,200 yards, 20 touchdowns and five interceptions in 2012 and rushed for 815 yards on 120 attempts while reaching the end zone seven times. 2013 hasn't been as kind as RGIII has been hampered since the knee injury and is 158-for-268 (59.0 percent) for 1,878 yards while his eight picks almost match his nine touchdowns. His running game has been limited as he's rushed for 240 yards on 43 attempts and no scores.
