NFL Trade Rumors: Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers Talked Deal for Colin Kaepernick

The Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers reportedly talked about a possible trade involving disgruntled quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

Kaepernick, who has been mentioned in numerous NFL trade rumors this offseason, reportedly asked his representatives to seek a trade, but nothing has been finalized at this point.

According to Akron Beacon Journal, the Browns expressed strong interest in trading for Kaepernick, who led the 49ers to two National Football Conference titles in his five seasons in San Francisco.

Browns head of football operations Sashi Brown admitted that they indeed talked to the 49ers about Kaepernick. However, Brown clarified that they just engaged in preliminary discussion and that some reports were made just to catch a headline. Brown denied that they offered a deal involving draft picks to San Francisco.

"So and so is reporting we've got into contract negotiations and draft-pick negotiations with San Francisco that just weren't happening," Brown said. "We were called about whether or not we'd have some interest and had some very preliminary discussions, and it didn't go much further than that."

Kaepernick's future in San Francisco remains left hanging in the balance as the 49ers are expected to make a decision soon, considering the fact that the quarterback's $11.9 million base salary for next season will become guaranteed after the deadline.

Aside from the Browns, the Denver Broncos are also being linked to Kaepernick. According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, the Broncos are the most interested in Kaepernick despite the former Nevada standout's poor showing last season, where he just tallied 1,615 passing yards for six touchdowns against five interceptions in nine games.

"I still hear the Broncos as being the team most interested in actually getting something done and, in the end, other clubs seem willing to call the 49ers' bluff about keeping the disgruntled quarterback," La Canfora said.

The defending Super Bowl champions are in dire need for a quarterback after veteran Peyton Manning retired and Brock Osweiler signed with the Houston Texans. Earlier this month, the Broncos traded for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Mark Sanchez but it remains to be seen whether or not he will eventually start for Denver.
