Gennady "GGG" Golovkin is overwhelmingly favored to win in his next fight, but unbeaten challenger Dominic Wade believes he will score a shocking victory on April 23 at The Forum in Inglewood, California.
Wade, who owns a perfect 18-0 record with 12 of his victories coming by knockout, insisted that he is not afraid of Golovkin. The 25-year-old middleweight contender pointed out that he has all the tools to hand Golovkin the first defeat of his career.
"I feel like guys got in there and were defeated and scared before they got in there," Wade said via BoxingScene. "No reason to be scared, they do the same thing I do. My heart, my style, my skill. Styles make fights."
Wade added that Willie Monroe Jr. had a good chance to score an upset against Golovkin in May last year. But Wade said Monroe did not possess the power to hurt the unbeaten Kazakh. The Maryland native also felt that David Lemieux did not try to mix it up with Golovkin in October.
"You have to take more chances," Wade continued. "I think Lemieux was a little nervous. Some people get nervous and shut down. You have to mix it up. You got to box and punch. You have to try and miss the shots you can't see and take the shots you do see."
Meanwhile, Abel Sanchez, Golovkin's trainer, said that his prized fighter is not taking Wade lightly. The veteran trainer insisted that Golovkin is motivated to keep his World Boxing Association, International Boxing Federation and International Boxing Organization middleweight titles.
Sanchez told BoxingScene that Golovkin, who has not tasted defeat in 34 bouts and has knocked out 31 opponents, is looking to break Bernard Hopkins' record of most consecutive middleweight title defenses. Hopkins had 20 straight successful defenses, while Golovkin has won in his last 15 title defenses.
If Golovkin wins, the 33-year-old champion could also get the biggest fight of his career -- against World Boxing Council middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in September.
