Gonzalo Higuain will be in the lineup for Napoli today when they take the pitch against Marseille. Higuain has been battling a strained hamstring, but got on the pitch for 22 minutes on Friday. On Friday Napoli fell to Roma in a Serie A matchup, and leading scorer Marek Hamsik was not pleased with Napoli's performance.
"I am certain that we can react immediately,'' Hamsik said to Gazzetta dello Sport. "I didn't have a good game and we need to play better at Marseille than we did at Roma. We face a difficult game as Marseille are one of the best teams in the Ligue 1. But it's clear that if we want to progress to the next round we need to get a good result in France.''
Hamsik showed a great deal of respect to Marseille, who is 0-0-2 heading into this match and in desperate need of a victory if they plan on advancing to the knockout stage. Three consecutive defeats in all competitions is an indication that we are going through a difficult time,'' goalkeeper Steve Mandanda said.
Marseille coach Elie Baup said, "We have to turn our anger and frustration into determination against Napoli. I have not seen my players downbeat.''
Whatever adjustments Baup makes should be focused on correcting a leaky defense that has surrendered five goals in two matches. Marseille comes into this contest sporting a goal differential of negative four, a full three goals worse than Napoli's.
Working in their favor? Midfielder Dimitri Payet is expected to return to the lineup after serving a one-game suspension.
