Today at 1:00 p.m., emotions will run high when the New England Patriots (5-1) visit MetLife Stadium for their second date with the New York Jets (3-3), which can be live streamed by clicking this link. Jets fans can listen to the rivalry game on 98.7 ESPN FM, while Patriots fans may do the same on 98.5 The Sports Hub.
The Patriots 5-1 record is very impressive, considering they let Tom Brady's most reliable receiver, Wes Welker, walk in the offseason, as injuries piled up in the receiving corps. Tight end Rob Gronkowski is expected back this week, but Danny Amendola is still out, while Brady still can't truly trust rookies Kenbrell Thompkins and Aaron Dobson.
"A lot of teams face challenges. It's just really how you deal with them," Brady said. "We've lost some guys, dealt with some issues, like every other team. We're handling them OK. We're 5-1. It's a decent start."
While Brady traditionally mangles the Jets, and has an 18-4 career record against Gang Green, he acknowledged this version has a ferocious defensive line that can get after it. "They're all pretty big, physical guys," Brady said. "Got some really good players over there, especially in the front. They're a very good defense."
Geno Smith has had an up-and-down first NFL season, but he's hungry to avenge the Jets' Week 2 loss. "Although I am a rookie, I don't tend to use that excuse as the reason behind me making those mistakes," Smith said. "I think they're just simple mistakes in a game and they've got to be eliminated."
Perhaps the Jets will lean on the running game. Patriots defensive tackle Vince Wilfork is out for the season while star linebacker Jerod Mayo will also miss the Week 7 tilt.
"We've got a heck of a game coming up, a division game," center Nick Mangold said. "We've got to put some work in to get better. We've already dropped one to them."
