Adrien Broner's next fight against Marcos "El Chino" Maidana has been finalized for pay-per-view on December 14th, and "The Problem" is making big claims about using this matchup as a springboard to take over the sport of boxing.
"Maidana is a hell of a fighter. He will come to fight but, at the end of the day, this is my breaking point into taking over boxing and I will not let this guy kill my vibe," Broner told ESPN.com. "The game is mine and I am the best. My big brother Floyd got a few more fights left (and then) I will carry the torch and sit on top alone."
Broner enters this fight undefeated, with 27 victories, zero losses and no draws, with 22 of his wins coming by way of knockout. He has already claimed belts in three weight classes at the age of 24, most recently jumping to welterweight and taking a split decision from Paulie Malignaggi in his hometown of Brooklyn.
Still, many boxing fans and pundits have criticized Broner for his lack of real competition, and look at Maidana as a true test of Broner's ability to become boxing's next top draw.
"I'm not just a boxer. I'm a megastar, and now I'm about to become a pay-per-view megastar," Broner said. "I'm not cocky. I'm very confident in the skill I was blessed with and I want everybody to come out and support me at the MGM Grand and watch on pay-per-view on Dec. 14."
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer offered praise to Broner for accepting the fight with the hard-punching Maidana, and assuming big risk in the face of doubters.
"Props to Broner to stepping up to the plate and taking on a guy like Maidana with huge knockout power and to Maidana to take on a guy people discuss as a future pound-for-pound star," Schaefer said. "It's as hot of a fight as you could make in any division. I'm excited about the fight. It has fireworks written all over it."
