At 9:00 p.m. tonight the New Jersey Devils (0-1-3, 3 points) will try and get their first crooked number in the win column when they travel to Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary to take on the Flames (2-0-2, 6 points). 18-year-old rookie Sean Monahan has been one of the biggest reasons for Calgary's unbeaten streak to kick off the 2013-2014 season. "Obviously it's a great start," said Monahan. "We haven't lost a game in regulation. It's been a lot of fun. I'm getting more comfortable every day."
Flames head coach Bob Hartley can hardly believe his fortune in getting such a prime talent on his team. "I sometimes pinch myself and wonder if I need to check his birth certificate, the poise he is showing for an 18-year-old kid," Hartley said.
The Devils have been unable to hold leads this year, suffering several brutal losses already. "It's not easy to get a lead in this league and we had it the last two games, 3-0 and 2-0 and we still get only two points together, so we should get more points than that," said right-winger Jaromir Jagr.
The Devils have also struggled to find the back of the net, scoring just 2.25 goals per game compared to Calgary's 3.75. They are also failing to pepper opposing goaltenders the way Calgary has averaging 26 shots on goal per game as opposed to the Flames' 32.5.
The Devils have been splitting time in net between Martin Brodeur and Cory Schneider, but they should consider starting Schneider more often than not. He is not the NHL legend Brodeur is, but Marty is 3.24 goals a night, and saving 86.8 percent of the shots against him. Both marks are below Scheneider's 2.94 goals against average and 88.7 save percentage.
