In early October, rumors swirled that Amir Khan had pulled out of his fight with Devon Alexander on December 7th, to sign on to face Floyd Mayweather Jr. in May. Following that announcement, both sides have expressed confusion, while Team Khan has outright denied the reports.

Amir is currently in training camp in San Francisco with the aim of fighting again in December against Alexander once an agreement can be reached."
If Khan is still set on facing Alexander, he may still earn the shot at Mayweather with a win. Still, Floyd may want to announce an opponent soon to begin the hype train. Could that opponent be Miguel Cotto in a rematch?
Cotto was impressive in knocking out Delvin Rodriguez on October 5th, and caused Mayweather the most problems in all of his recent fights.
"Miguel is ready to go against Mayweather," Cotto's trainer Freddie Roach said. "He is in the best shape of his career. He returned to the style that he needed to go back to, and as Miguel said last week, if I had been in his corner for his fight against Mayweather, he would have won."
Top Rank chairman Bob Arum has a poor relationship with Showtime these days, though, where Mayweather now fights exclusively. Cotto is technically a free agent, so a fight can be made, but Cotto appears aligned with Top Rank.
Also, Arum has implied that Floyd fears a rematch with the reinvigorated Cotto. "Well, after the way Miguel looked, I would doubt very much that Mayweather would be inclined to take that fight with Miguel," Arum said.
Fans dreaming of a Cotto rematch with Freddie Roach by his side should probably not get their hopes up. Cotto will likely face middleweight champion Sergio Martinez in his next appearance, with an outside chance of taking on Canelo Alvarez.
