This Sunday the Philadelphia Eagles will take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with Darrelle Revis likely entrusted with locking down Philadelphia's top receiving threat, DeSean Jackson.
Jackson's been piping up, however, about his ability to escape "Revis Island." "I'm sure Darrelle Revis will follow me around," Jackson said Tuesday. "He followed me around when he was with the New York Jets two years ago. I'm sure his coaches are confident in him. But I don't think he can run with me. I don't think he's as fast as me."
The pair faced off in 2011, in a game in which Jackson was limited to two catches and 28 yards. Still, Jackson claims to have had Revis wheezing. "He was like, 'You're too fast, slow down,'" Jackson said. "I'm just going to try to put my speed on him and stress on him as I can. I've got to do what I need to."
The Bucs, despite their winless start to the season, have boasted one of the league's best defenses. Their pass defense has been especially stout, due in no small part to Revis' contributions. Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara, who faces Jackson twice a year, thinks that Revis may struggle though.
"DeSean Jackson is so fast. He's the fastest receiver I've ever seen, by far," Amukamara said. "I just remember watching when I was in college -- and nobody around here will talk about this -- but that punt return against the Giants [in 2010]. And I remember wondering, 'How fast must he look on the field?' And it's unbelievable."
Jackson tried not to step on Revis' toes too hard, also offering compliments on his play and status in the NFL. "You're always aware of who's one of the best corners, and vice versa," Jackson said. "He's aware of who are the fastest receivers."
DeSean continued, "He's a great player. I don't want to take away from him. He has elusiveness, he's smart, he has intelligence, he has feet work. He's one of those guys, he knows what he's doing. He's comfortable and he's confident playing press or playing off the ball."
