Tonight at 8:30 p.m. from Candlestick Park, the San Francisco 49ers will try to impose their will during primetime like they did last Thursday, this time against the Houston Texans. The 49ers ran the ball down the St. Louis Rams' throat last Thursday coming off two blowout losses in a row. It was exactly the type of response head coach Jim Harbaugh wanted from his team.
"You want that response," Harbaugh said. "I thought the team stared adversity in the face (with) a lot of grit and determination. The guys played with great energy and great toughness." Frank Gore rushed for 153 yards on Thursday after amassing just 142 in the three games prior combined.
"We know the talent we have on this team," 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick said. "We know what we're capable of."
In Houston, the Texans' struggles are frustrating the fan base. After last week's collapse against the Seattle Seahawks, fans were lighting Matt Schaub jerseys on fire and many in the media were questioning Schaub's hold on the starting quarterback job. Texans coach Gary Kubiak is refusing to bail on the maligned passer.
"He's our quarterback," he said. "I don't see a lack of confidence. I see poor decision-making situations. It's something he has to handle and something we have to help him handle." Houston will likely lean on Arian Foster to help Schaub out; Foster appears to have healed up from his preseason maladies. Against Seattle he compiled 171 yards of total offense in the loss.
The running games will be crucial, and Houston might have a tough time halting Gore if star linebacker Brian Cushing, who sustained a concussion last week, cannot go.
