TMZ is reporting George Zimmerman has disappeared to avoid being served divorce papers by his estranged wife.
Zimmerman, who was acquitted in the shooting death of unarmed Florida teen Trayvon Martin earlier this summer, hasn't been publicly seen since police were called to the home he once shared with wife, Shellie, after a fracas broke out between the couple and her father. Shellie's father reportedly tried to protect her after Zimmerman allegedly punched in the face.
TMZ adds proceedings have now been put on hold as attorneys for Shellie Zimmerman seek to locate Zimmerman's whereabouts. The website also reports sources close to Zimmerman admit he has been in contact with family members, but even they aren't exactly sure just where he's staying right now.
A former self-appointed neighborhood watch captain, Zimmerman shot and killed the 17-year-old Martin after disobeying a 911 dispatcher's stern suggestion to seek with following the teen, whom he later admitted he thought suspicious because he was gingerly walking through the neighborhood wearing a hoodie.
On the day of their altercation, Shellie Zimmerman told police her soon-to-be ex also threatened her and her father with a gun. That altercation, along with at least two other traffic violations Zimmerman has been stopped or cited for since his acquittal, recently prompted Lake Mary, Fla. police chief Steve Bracknell to admit to a town resident in an email he feared Zimmerman might be becoming a loose cannon.
