Fred Smoot Rips Redskins, RG3, Calls Mike Shanahan 'The Red Lobster' And Griffin A 'Brat' [LISTEN]

Though former NFL cornerback Fred Smoot played seven seasons of his nine-year career with the Washington Redskins, there more than likely won't be a happy reunion between he and his former team anytime soon. Smoot recently dug into head coach Mike Shanahan, who he referred to as "The Red Lobster" while also labeling Washington's second-year quarterback Robert Griffin III as a "brat."

Smoot offered some scathing criticisms of both on Monday, and even called for Shanahan to be replaced.

According to Yahoo Sports, Smoot appeared on 106.7 The Fan in Washington, D.C. to offer his highly critical take on the 0-3 Redskins.

"If you're going to make a coaching change for the future, it's time to make it now," Smoot told the radio station, according to Yahoo! Sports. "Robert Griffin III has been a Redskin now for one and a half years. If you're gonna change his coach and you want a coach to grow with him like the Bradys and Belichicks and all the great pairs of quarterbacks and coaches, you have to do it now."

Smoot wasn't done there with doing a number on Shanahan:

"And right now, I think the Red Lobster's working his way outta here. I think Shanahan is working his way out of here," he added.

After Shanahan coached the team to a 10-6 record last season as RGIII led the Redskins to the team's first division title since 1999 in his rookie campaign, things haven't gone as smoothly this year. First, there was reports of off the field issues between RG3 and Shanahan regarding the team's slow and steady approach to having Griffin return from Jan. 9 knee surgery, which seemed to upset the quarterback enough to tell the media he was frustrated with it.

Now, there's the 0-3 start that is painting the team in a negative light as it attempts to win a second consecutive NFC East title. After the team lost its home opener to the Philadelphia Eagles 33-27 and then dropped its second game of the season to the Green Bay Packers 38-20, it failed to get back on track in Week 3 at home where it lost to the Detroit Lions 27-20. If the team drops its Week 4 matchup to the Oakland Raiders on the road Sunday, the headlines won't get any better, and Smoot knows that.

"The Red Lobster and RGIII, they're not compatible right now," Smoot said on 106.7 The Fan, according to Yahoo Sports. "And right now, you can't have one without the other. I think one thing the Red Lobster has lost this locker room. I think him and RGIII, I don't know if it's a disrespect there, but they don't respect each other like a coach and a quarterback should."

As for possible replacements for Shanahan? Smoot had some ideas.

"And until you get a Cowher, a Gruden, not somebody that RG will bow down to, but he respects in a different way, I think we're going to see the same back-and-forth arguing," he told the program.

Shanahan wasn't the only target for Smoot, as he also went after RG3 for 'buying into the attention.'

"It's about time somebody be honest," Smoot said per Yahoo Sports. "Sometimes RGIII can be a brat, alright? Because I'm watching these other quarterbacks and I'm watching how they compose themselves and the things they do. With Luck and Wilson, and it's a different vibe."

Added Smoot: "Sometimes I'm starting to think that RGIII is really really buying into the attention. But I tell anybody this. The NFL will humble you. And I think he's going through that humbling process right now as we speak."

While Smoot put it into harsher terms than most would, the Redskins are in desperate need of a turnaround, and if the wheels fall off once again in Week 4, and the offensive struggles continue to mount, perhaps owner Daniel Snyder will have to make a change at the helm.
