Former Knick Murder Update: Gay Dating App Played A Role In Brooklyn Homicide, Police Say [VIDEO]

Michael Wright, a former second-round draft pick of the Knicks in 2001, was found dead in the back of his Lexus SUV in Brooklyn on Tuesday, his body covered in trash bags according to The New York Daily News. Authorities say Wright died from a head wound, and that he was possibly murdered by someone he met on a gay dating app called Grindr. His skull was reportedly fractured.

Wright’s cousin Randolph Berry spoke with the Daily News, but couldn’t confirm if Wright was gay.

“We don’t know anything about his personal life.” Berry said. “All we know is that he did damage overseas. When he played ball, he destroyed everyone in front of him.”

Berry said he did not know why anyone would want to hurt Wright. “He was a gentle giant. He was a good person.”

While Wright was found on Tuesday, and his death was ruled a homicide on Wednesday, Wright’s roommates reported him missing on Sunday. Neighbors told police that his vehicle had been sitting in the spot it was found since Sunday, according to the Daily News.

Wright, who played in the NCAA championship game as a member of the 2001 Arizona Wildcats, never suited up for the Knicks, and spent his career overseas. He averaged 16 points and six rebounds while playing for various European clubs. He was also a high school teammate of Timberwolves forward Kevin Garnett.
