The Titans have not scored more than 13 points in their last four games, and have a 1-6 record this year despite a stretch of four consecutive home games. They lost all four of those games, and their only win came vs. the Buccaneers in a Week 1 romp that they can credit mostly to rookie QB Jameis Winston’s turnovers. That’s why they fired head coach Ken Whisenhunt today, and named Mike Mularkey interim head coach.
It’s not hard to see why Whisenhunt has gotten canned, even if mid-season firings tend to impact that season’s results very little. After initial success in Arizona, he presided over three straight losing seasons before losing his job. In Tennessee, he’s been unable to muster effective offenses with mobile quarterbacks; he’s 3-20 overall in Tennessee and failed to get much out of former QB Jake Locker, and thus far hasn’t made the most of Marcus Mariota’s explosiveness.

The problem is that they’re turning to Mularkey, whose track record as a head coach is even spottier than Whisenhunt’s. Mularkey led the 2004 Bills to a 9-7 campaign, but they fell to 5-11 the next season and he was fired. He surfaced in 2012 as the Jaguars’ head coach, but lasted just one season after they went 2-14. He has a career winning percentage of 33 percent, seven points fewer than Whisenhunt.
Mularkey also did a poor job with a former first-round pick at quarterback. In 2005 the Bills went with J.P. Losman as their QB, who went 1-7 and was eventually benched for veteran Kelly Holcomb. Tennessee is hoping Mularkey learned from his awful experiences with Losman and Blaine Gabbert in Jacksonville, and, at the very least, doesn’t stunt Mariota’s growth.
