Boxing News 2015: Time Is Not on Gennady Golovkin's Side

Gennady Golovkin has been dismantling all opponents thrown at him, but all this is futile unless the Kazakh boxer is able to fight one of the big name fighters in the middleweight division.

At the top of the list is of course the winner of the upcoming Miguel Cotto vs. Canelo Alvarez fight, though the two have set conditions which Golovkin has found absurd.

These are seen as ways to waylay Golovkin or at least avoid a showdown with him despite the fact that the WBC has instilled Triple G as the mandatory challenger to the belt currently held by Cotto.

Despite claims that they are not avoiding a match with the Kazakh KO artist, not too many people are convinced that such is the case. Alvarez is not budging, standing firm on fighting at 155-lbs while Cotto has been known to call the shots.

So should Golovkin target someone else?

Triple G can easily find some other opponent willing to get into the ring with him like David Lemieux. Bu with the big names slowly dwindling and at age 33, GGG not getting any younger, he could end up with less-heralded opponents. Given the age factor, he may not have enough time to get to the top and catapult his career to where it should be.

So what can Triple G do?

Though he is against it, he may want to satisfy the conditions set by the boxers on the other end. He could try and trim down to the 155-pound catchweight that Alvarez has stood firm of staying on and take it from there.

The same case goes for Cotto. He could satisfy the reasonable conditions set first and then land a fight with the Puerto Rican champion. Should more stipulations be added, then perhaps it would be time for the WBC to step in, though it is a known fact that they are not too keen on adding such conditions.

In the end, Golovkin could end up winning the title without breaking a sweat. But the fact remains that great boxers are recognized inside the ring and not via the board room. Golovkin is known to be a competitor and for now, whether he likes it or not, he may have to bend and then rise toward greatness in the process.
