NFL Relocation Update: Chargers Have Bags Packed, But San Diego Making Effort To Keep Franchise [VIDEO]

The latest effort to keep the Chargers in San Diego is flashy, but light on details. A new stadium proposal has been released, and it involves enormous scoreboards, party decks in the end zones, and a gigantic canopy chock full of LED lights. According to NBC, however, the proposal doesn’t include some essentials.

“What's missing is any specific information about things like the number of luxury boxes, always an important source of revenue,” NBC’s Greg Bledsoe and Becky Stickney wrote.

Raiders, Chargers Planning To Share A Stadium

Another problem with the Mission Valley stadium is that it would be located in the same spot as the current Qualcomm Stadium, while the Chargers have maintained a downtown San Diego location is preferable. The Chargers have publicly stated they will file for re-location to Los Angeles, where as many as three teams may wind up. The Chargers are joined by the Oakland Raiders and St. Louis Rams in the race to L.A.

Chargers special counsel Mark Fabiani said the slick video presentation was “just more wasted taxpayer money.” The mayor’s office told NBC that a downtown stadium is possible, “but the timeline of getting a downtown stadium would be much longer, and likely more expensive than Mission Valley.”

Politics among NFL ownership are also in play. The Chargers reportedly are struggling to get the necessary support from the other NFL owners to move, while their main competitor, Stan Kroenke, reportedly is facing resistance from a group of influential owners that may kill his chances.
