Floyd "Money" Mayweather dominated an overmatched Canelo Alvarez to easily claim a majority decision and unify the WBA/WBC junior middleweight titles Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Mayweather easily outpointed Canelo on two of the three judges cards, with the third judge somewhat surprisingly scoring the fight a 114-114 draw.
Earlier in the week, Mayweather reasoned to ESPN about Canelo "he's 42-0, if he fought Floyd Mayweather 42 times he be 0-42." And in the end, he made good on his boast, surgically picking about the overmatched novice in a master vs. student like performance.
The five-division world champ and eight time title holder was in rare form before an overflow Las Vegas crowd, battering a defenseless Canelo with an assortment of jabs and hooks that resulted in the 23-year-old's left eye being nearly swollen shut by the fourth round.
Showtime had labeled the fight "The One," and in the end it truly was all about Mayweather as he easily went about the business of solidifying his grasp on the sport and his place in history. Mayweather pocketed a record-setting $41.5 million from the fight and where he goes from here is all up to him.
ESPN speculated that he may next face off against Adrien Broner, Devon Alexander "The Great" or maybe even fellow Saturday night winner Danny Garcia next, but does it really even matter?
"I'm at the pinnacle," he said in the days leading up to the fight. "I'm the face of boxing, and I'm dedicated to my craft. I'm Floyd Mayweather."
Saturday night, he again displayed to everyone just what that means.
