Marcus Mariota Injury Update: Don't Rush To Pick Up Zach Mettenberger In Fantasy [VIDEO]

Marcus Mariota has been ruled out of the Titans’ Week 7 matchup against the Falcons, but unless you’re in a two-quarterback league with Mariota as your QB2, don’t hurt yourself rushing to pick up Zach Mettenberger.

In fact, if you need Mettenberger, shame on you, because you should’ve drafted or otherwise acquired a suitable third QB.

The matchup vs. the Falcons is a decent one. They are ranked 20th vs. the pass according to FootballOutsiders.com, and they especially struggle against No. 2 receivers. Harry Douglas has also been ruled out of this tilt, meaning rookie Dorial Green-Beckham might be in for his breakout game. Just because DGB has an exciting matchup though, doesn’t mean Mettenberger does.

His NFL track record is brief, and overwhelmingly average. He will be playing behind the NFL’s second-worst pass-blocking line, which has an Adjusted Sack Rate of 11.2 percent. It’s no surprise Mariota’s already missing time with an injury, and Mettenberger has never been a model of health. Atlanta’s defensive line isn’t particularly ferocious – they have just seven sacks this year, 27th in the NFL – but they do have talent, and a line as porous as Tennessee’s, combined with a quarterback as immobile as Mettenberger, could jumpstart them.

Mettenberger won’t get any help from arguably the NFL’s worst running game either, which is spearheaded by the incredibly average Bishop Sankey, Dexter McCluster, Antonio Andrews three-headed monster. These guys put up no stats despite a top-10 run blocking line clearing the way, and have contributed to the Titans scoring 14 points or fewer in three of their five games.

Alex Smith, Josh McCown, and Ryan Fitzpatrick are all owned in fewer than 28 percent of leagues, so hop on those trains before riding Mettenberger in a 10-12 point effort.
