George Zimmerman is being detained and questioned by Florida police after his estranged wife placed a 911 emergency call on Monday alleging he threatened her and her father with a handgun during a heated domestic dispute, according to CNN.
Zimmerman, a self-appointed neighborhood watch patrolman, was acquitted just over six weeks ago in the shooting death of unarmed Florida teen Trayvon Martin after admitting he disobeyed a 911 dispatcher's advice to seize with following the teen who he later said he thought looked suspicious because he was wearing a hoodie and slowly walking in the rain.
Since his acquittal, Shellie Zimmerman has filed for divorce from her 29-year-old husband, telling TMZ she "never really knew him" and he was "selfish at the core."
In Monday's incident, CNN reported police said they were called to the home by Shellie Zimmerman, who claimed Zimmerman was threatening both her and her father with a weapon. The 26-year woman filed for divorce from her husband of nearly seven years in Seminole County late last last week.
The filing came after she pleaded guilty to perjury on Aug. 28 for lying about the state of the couple's finances during a bond hearing in April of 2012, shortly after he had been formally charged in the killing of Martin and had reportedly raised several hundred thousands via a fundraising site designed to aid him with legal expenses.
Multiple media reports indicated Shellie Zimmerman appeared in court alone during her proceedings, in stark contrast to the way she was by her husband's side during each day of his lengthy trial.
"As of right now, George Zimmerman has been placed in investigative detention," Lake Mary police spokesman Zach Hudson told CNN. "Anytime we have anybody suspected of doing anything, we place them in investigative detention until a complete investigation has been done."
Since his July 13 acquittal, Zimmerman has now been involved in police related investigations on at least three separate occasions, including most recently being pulled over and issued a $256 speeding ticket by Florida police late last month.
