A fan who attended Sunday afternoon's San Francisco 49ers vs. Green Bay Packers game died shortly after kickoff, after falling from the elevated Jamestown walkway to the sidewalk below, according to reports.
Multiple witnesses who saw the man fall say he appeared intoxicated at the time of his accident. San Francisco police spokesman Gordon Shyy said the fan was administered first aid until an ambulance arrived, but his injuries were too severe. It isn't clear exactly how far down he had fallen.
A 49ers spokesman named Bob Lange addressed the situation in a statement, saying on behalf of the organization ''We would like to express our deepest condolences to the family during this difficult time."
On the same day, two fans were injured during the Indianapolis Colts' game against the Oakland Raiders when a barrier fans were leaning on collapsed. The barrier was above the tunnel used by the Raiders, and fans fell onto the walkways that lead to the teams' locker rooms.
USA Today reports that a witness claims one fan required a stretcher after the fall, while another was wheeled away in a wheelchair. The Colts did not confirm that, though, and a team spokesman named Avis Roper said there was no immediate word on the severity of the injuries suffered.
It's been a rough stretch for fans attending live sports events, though. Last month a Denver Broncos fan was hurt during a preseason game when he tumbled 10 feet from an escalator.
More recently, at an Atlanta Braves game a fan fell 85 feet to his death from the upper deck of Turner Field. That fan, Ronald Lee Homer Jr., was the third fan death in an Atlanta stadium this year.
The 49ers will be moving out of Candlestick Park at the end of the season, and moving into a $1.2 billion complex in their Silicon Valley headquarters in Santa Clara.
