For the second time less than two months since his acquittal in the shooting death of unarmed Florida teen Trayvon Martin, one-time neighborhood patrolman George Zimmerman has been stopped by police for traffic infractions, according to the New York Daily News.
Unlike his July 28th stop in Texas when cops let him go with just a warning, Zimmerman was ticketed for speeding by Florida police on Tuesday and issued a $256 ticket. Officers say Zimmerman was driving his Honda Ridgeline 60 mph in a 45-mph zone.
In a video released by authorities of the incident, Zimmerman can be seen wearing a black wool cap and dark shades. "I didn't see, I'm sorry," Zimmerman mumbled to Officer Jason McDaniel, The News reported.
Police said there not sure if Zimmerman was armed at the time of the incident. "We didn't ask if he had weapons," Public Information Officer Zach Hudson told The News. "Since you can carry a gun in your care here, we generally don't ask that question.
Zimmerman shot and killed Martin in February of 2012 just steps from his father's home after he ignored a 911 dispatcher's stern advice to stop following the teen. Zimmerman said he thought Martin was suspicious because he was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and slowly walking in the rain.
The shooting sparked a flood of demonstrations across the country and has cast greater scrutiny on so-called "stand-your-ground" laws that allowed Zimmerman to build his defense around the premise of self defense.
