Jarryd Hayne, a rugby start trying to make it in the NFL, is sort of a position-less beast. He mostly plays running back though, so getting zero carries in Week 3 obviously isn’t good. That did not stop him from impacting the game, however.
Hayne, who fumbled his first regular season punt return attempt, hasn’t shaken the 49ers’ faith in him as a special teams ace. He rewarded their trust with an exciting punt return that set up the 49ers for their first – and only – score of a horrific afternoon.
Hayne caught the ball on the run and blew by several Cardinals before stumbling just enough to let an Arizona defender push him out of bounds. The score would have been the first of Hayne’s career, which is being followed feverishly in his native Australia.

“I had an opportunity, and I wanted to make the most of it,” Hayne said. “I obviously lost my footing at the end there. I wish I would’ve stayed up, but it wasn’t meant to be.
“Like I keep saying every week, I’m just living and learning. For me, that has been my mentality and that will be my mentality. I just want to get better every week and help the team however I can.”
So far Hayne has six carries for 16 yards, and zero receptions on one target.
