Tim Tebow News Update: Will He End Up In The Canadian Football League After Patriots Cut? [VIDEO]

With Tim Tebow recently being cut by the New England Patriots and the future of his career in the NFL in question, could the quarterback be heading to the Canadian Football League?

Tebow, who was cut by the Patriots over the weekend, has insisted on being an NFL quarterback and has even avoided a position change, but Steve Clarkson, who worked with Tebow this offseason, said Tebow should go to Canada and play in a league where Clarkson believes the 26 year old could excel.

The Montreal Alouettes of the CFL own the rights to Tebow, but team coach and general manager Jim Popp told Yahoo Sports he's never had a conversation with Tebow.

"I own his rights and I never even spoke to the guy," Popp told Yahoo Sports two days before Tebow's final preseason game with the Patriots, amid rumors that the quarterback would be cut.

The Alouettes acquired the rights to Tebow at then-head coach Marc Trestman's request in 2010. Trestman is now the head coach of the Chicago Bears while Tebow's future status remains in question.

With Trestman gone, Popp isn't looking to rush into trying to land Tebow, even with the team's usual quarterback Anthony Calvillo sidelined with a concussion since Aug. 17.

"Would I look at him? Sure he's a winner," Popp said per Yahoo Sports. "Would he ever be the starter? I have no idea."

Popp added that Tebow's ability to run the football would work well in the CFL since the league only uses three downs, and often there is a scramble for first downs and a need to have the ability to run the ball. However, Popp also recognizes that while Tebow can be a great player, it's also quite a necessity to throw the ball to receivers and Tebow would have to fix his accuracy issues in regards to hurling the pigskin.

"This league, because the field is so wide, you still have to throw the ball, and I don't know if Tim Tebow would ever work in this league," Popp explained to Yahoo Sports. "He would have the opportunity to run the ball in this league but if you can't make all the throws, you can't play in this league."

Tebow's last NFL regular-season stint was with the New York Jets in 2012 where the quarterback was barely used. Tebow had just eight chances to throw the ball last season, connecting on six passes for 39 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. He also rushed for 102 yards on 32 attempts without reaching the end zone.

Tebow is one of the most interesting players in football as he led the Broncos to a division title in 2011, though with just an 8-8 record, and threw an 80-yard touchdown pass in the first play of an overtime game in a wildcard victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the playoffs that year but now has no place to call a home in the NFL.

So maybe, just maybe, he'll end up in Canada.
