NBA News 2015: Gerald Wallace To Become An Unrestricted Free Agent

When the 76ers took in Gerald Wallace this Summer, not too many were convinced that it would be the 33-year-old veteran’s last stop.

And the Sixers did what most expected, waiving the 6-foot-7 small forward, who will become an unrestricted free agent as soon as he clears waivers according to a report from ESPN.

Wallace had initially been traded by the Celtics to the Warriors last July 27 together with Chris Babb for David Lee. In a span of four days however, Wallace found himself moving yet again, this time to Philly in exchange for Jason Thompson.

Thus, Wallace is set to become an unrestricted free agent by Tuesday once he clears waivers. Right now there is no word on where Wallace could possibly end up. While Wallace is a certified NBA veteran, he hasn’t exactly been a bright spot on the basketball court for the past four years.

Wallace was in the final year of his contract with the Sixers, which is worth $10.1 million. His salary is seen as the main reason why the Celtics traded him for Lee and the same held true with the Warriors.

Wallace entered the league in 2001, selected 25th overall by the Kings. He barely made an impact with Sacramento during his first three years, but would get his big break when he was picked up by the Bobcats from the 2004 NBA Expansion Draft.

After spending seven seasons with Charlotte, he played one season with the Trailblazers before hooking up with the Nets in 2012.

Wallace was known for his reckless plays which resulted in varying injuries that took its toll on him eventually. His best years were from 2005 to 2012. With the Nets, injuries tolled heavily on Wallace, seeing a big dip in his numbers from there to this day.

Wallace holds averages of 11.9 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 14 NBA seasons. Among his list of achievements include that of being named as an NBA All Star and a member of the NBA All-Defensive First team in 2010 and the NBA Steals leader in 2006.
