Who Did Jets Cut August 26? One Arrested Running Back Remains, One Is Released; Mark Sanchez Safety Blanket Also Gone

The New York Jets were busy yesterday, sending some familiar faces packing. Running back and kick returner Joe McKnight, who failed to deliver on his post-draft hype has been cut by Gang Green, as well as wide receiver  #mce_temp_url#

Edwards, who has nursed a foot injury in camp was deemed expendable after the team signed former Browns No. 1 receiver Mohamed Massaquoi, and activated Santonio Holmes off the Physically Unable to Perform list. It is unclear when Holmes will actually begin practicing or be ready for game action, but he is eligible to play Week 1.

The Jets receivers ahead of Edwards were Holmes, Stephen Hill, Jeremy Kerley, Massaquoi, and speedster Clyde Gates.

The other high-profile Jet to get the boot was McKnight, who was released so they could keep free agent signee Mike Goodson. Goodson returned to the team yesterday but will be unavailable for the first four games of the regular season due to suspension.

Shortly after signing with the Jets, Goodson was arrested after a car he was riding in was found stopped on a highway. Goodson was passed out in the car, and a handgun as well as marijuana were found in the vehicle. Keeping a recently signed player with a significant run-in with the law may seem strange, when it requires cutting a valuable special teams player who contributed to a 2010 run to the AFC Championship.

McKnight hasn't been squeaky clean either, though. He too was arrested this offseason, after a traffic stop revealed outstanding warrants. McKnight was in and out of practice because of migraines and a "head injury." He also was involved in an embarrassing spat in which he challenged a fan to a fight on Twitter.

Upon his release, McKnight was positive about his Jets tenure, tweeting, "Love all my JETS AND JETS FANS HAD FUN. I love this place that's why this hurts some much, I loved all those guys in that locker room."

Gates and cornerback Kyle Wilson are expected to handle return duties.
