Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. On Friday, the entire sports world will pay tribute to each and every one of them.
MLS
The South Ward at Red Bull Arena is known for its raucous chants, but will take the high road on Friday night. The Viking Army, Garden State Ultras and Empire Supporters will all hold a moment of silence in the middle of the Red Bulls' match against the Fire.
Nascar
Landon Cassill will carry the flag for Nascar at Darlington Raceway. Literally.
Cassill's No. 40 Chevrolet SS will pay tribute to Sterlin Marlin's 2001 "God Bless America" paint scheme during throwback weekend.
"It was a defining cultural moment when Sterling ran this paint scheme on his No. 40," Cassill said, per Fox Sports. "This paint scheme pays tribute to him and all those who were affected by the Sept. 11 attacks."
MLB
All of MLB will pay tribute on Friday -- wearing caps with a side patch of an American flag during games. The Yankees will host a pregame ceremony and the "We Shall Not Forget" MLB batter ribbon will be displayed throughout the ballpark.
Special lineup cards and base jewels will be used as well.
The ideal scenario would see both the Mets and Yankees wear FDNY or NYPD hats in honor of those who risked their lives that fateful day, but the people at MLB in charge of that decision don't have a soul.
