Chris Christie, the governor of New Jersey, should adopt a new title-Rex Ryan's public defender. The outspoken Christie filled in for former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason on WFAN's popular morning show Boomer & Carton, and had some nasty things to say about Jets beat writer Manish Mehta.
"The guy's a complete idiot," Christie said. "Self-consumed, underpaid, reporter. The only reason he's empowered is because we're spending all this time talking about Manish Mehta. Who, by the way, I couldn't pick out of a lineup and no Jets fan gives a damn about Manish Mehta...We shouldn't be giving this dope, you know, the amount of airtime we've given him already."
Christie's tough words came after Ryan was roundly criticized and harshly questioned for his decision to insert Mark Sanchez into a preseason game after rookie quarterback Geno Smith started the game and threw three interceptions.
Smith's performance in all likelihood tipped the scale toward Sanchez as the Jets' regular season starter, but Sanchez wound up hurting his shoulder, putting his availability in doubt.
Ryan grew frustrated with the criticism of his decision to play Sanchez, as well as nonstop questioning about who the starter will be on September 8th against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, resorting to turning his back on reporters while they asked him questions.
Mehta tweeted,
Geno Smith handling himself like much more of a professional than his head coach. #nyj

He then said Ryan deserved to be fired for putting Sanchez in harm's way after Smith performed in a fashion that should have served to clear up the entire QB controversy.
Rex Ryan should be fired tonight for signing off on one of the dumbest decisions I've ever seen. #nyj — Manish Mehta (@MMehtaNYDN) August 25, 2013
Following Christie's blistering tirade, Mehta didn't engage in a war of words. He simply said, "I have a great deal of respect for Governor Christie."
