Any delusional thoughts of seeing Neymar in Manchester United red was dismissed by Barcelona on Tuesday. Club president Josep Maria Bartomeu nullified talk of a move for the 23-year-old and said the club's intention is to secure him to a new long-term contract.
"Those are just rumors and what people write, but there is nothing to it," Bartomeu told Catalan radio station Catalunya Radio, per Sky Sports. "Neymar is happy at Barca. We don't want Neymar to leave at all. He is a young player that has an international football projection above the norm. He has helped us a lot in our recent successes.
Chicharito, Harry Kane Swap Good For Both United And Tottenham
"In a few months' time, we will discuss his contract extension as he has three years left on his current deal," he added. "We want him to stay for many years, three, five, 10 or even 15 years more with us."
United reportedly had the wage structure and transfer funds available to sign Neymar. Logic would see Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez—who still desires first-team minutes—travel to Barcelona's bench in exchange for a lower transfer fee. Although, the more likely scenario would be to another club altogether.
Chicharito The 'Best Substitute In The World'
Hernandez featured as a substitute against Newcastle on Saturday, but failed to score.
Teammate Chris Smalling believes the 27-year-old is improving and will fight for a place in Louis van Gaal's team.
"Chicha is looking so lively in training and he had a great chance as well [against Newcastle]," Smalling said, per the club's official website. "He was just unfortunate that a couple of meters either side and that nicks a goal."
Hernandez's next chance to fight for first team minutes will come against Club Brugge on Wednesday.
