David Terrell, a former Chicago Bears first-round draft-pick, has been charged with felony manufacturing or delivery of marijuana and a misdemeanor count of battery, according to ESPN.
Terrell, 35, was taken into custody Friday afternoon after police received a tip that someone was smoking marijuana. When police arrived at his apartment and conducted a search, they allegedly found cannabis scales and equipment to package drugs in plain view.
In addition to Terrell, whom authorities insist resisted officer’s demands and even struck one patrolman, two other men were also taken into custody. Police added one of the officers who struggled with Terrell later required medical attention.
Terrell was the No. 8 overall selection out of Michigan in 2001. He never flourished in the NFL, where he spent four seasons and totaled 128 catches Terrell was also charged with domestic battery in April of 2012.
Terrell thus becomes the second Bears player in recent memory to be jailed on felony drug charges. Receiver Sam Hurd pleaded guilty in Dallas earlier this year to trying to buy cocaine and marijuana to set up a drug-distribution network. He is scheduled to be sentenced sometime this month.
He could be sentenced up to life in prison and a $10 million fine.
