Antrel Rolle Injury: New York Giants Safety Leaves Practice On Cart

New York Giants safety Antrel Rolle injured his right ankle at practice Monday and reports indicate that the ankle is sprained.

The Giants can only hope for good news as they wait to hear further details on Rolle's recovery.

The New York Post reports that Rolle injured his ankle trying to defend a pass from No.2 quarterback David Carr that was intended for tight end Bear Pascoe. Rolle and Pascoe were entangled in the air as they both jumped after the ball, and they both crashed down to the turf. Rolle appeared to be in serious pain and after trainers looked at him he was carted off the field.

According to NFL.com, an MRI on Rolle's ankle following the injury revealed that he had an ankle sprain and there is no timetable for his return.

Rolle has been a staple of the Giants secondary for the last three seasons and is a team leader. Giants head coach Tom Coughlin was hoping the injury wouldn't be anything major and that he wouldn't have to replace Rolle with anyone else.

"I would much rather have (Rolle)," Coughlin said before the MRI results on the injury, per Newsday. "Hopefully it's an ankle and he's coming right back."

In 16 games last season, Rolle had two interceptions for 42 yards and contributed 71 tackles.

The Giants are looking to get back to the playoffs again after missing out last season despite landing in second place in the NFC East with a 9-7 record.

Rolle is a two-time Pro Bowler and won the Super Bowl with the Giants in the 2011-12 season.

Rolle has been a key part of the Giants defense, and the team can only hope the 30-year-old will be back in time for the season opener Sept. 8 against the Cowboys in Dallas.
