Cleveland Browns announcer and former quarterback Bernie Kosar has gotten himself in a bit of trouble following some harsh analysis of what St. Louis Rams backup quarterback Kellen Clemens brings to the table.
When discussing Clemens' attendance at Nationals Park for a mass led by Pope Benedict, and autographs the Pope received from him, Kosar complained that it upset him Clemens would do such a nice thing since he "hates" watching him play.
"Bless me Father for I have sinned, I have to watch him the whole fourth quarter," joked Kosar. The ex-Browns great wasn't done.
"He was at a Mass celebrated by the Pope at Washington Nationals stadium. The Pope reached down and grabbed his child and kissed him, and Clemens signed his miter," Kosar's partner was explaining when Kosar interrupted him.
God you're killing me. My Catholic guilt here, I'm talking and I can't stand watching him play and he does such a nice thing like that," Kosar opined.
Browns CEO Joe Banner issued a statement regarding Kosar's remarks that read:
"We don't condone the personal and unprofessional approach that Bernie took with some of his comments during the broadcast Thursday night. We've spoken to Bernie, he understands that, and we would expect the situation is resolved moving forward. We've also reached out to the Rams organization and have shared those same sentiments."
The reprimanding will be Kosar's only penalty, and he will not be fired by the team. As Kosar was speaking ill of Clemens, the Rams passer threw an interception that unfortunately gave some credence to Kosar's complaints.
Clemens has struggled throughout his career, appearing in 30 games but starting just 12. In seven NFL seasons Clemens has recorded seven touchdowns to 13 interceptions, 1o of which came in 2007 when he started a career-high 10 games for the New York Jets.
