Two teams in the Western Conference of MLS will do battle today in a match between the Portland Timbers and San Jose Earthquakes. Portland Timbers manager Caleb Porter (via MLS): "We just felt ... that playing [Fanendo] Adi high, occupying [Chad] Marshall and playing a fluid line of three underneath with basically three attacking mids, very creative and clever would be right way to set up, so we tried to play into Adi and get three guys basically narrow running off him."
San Jose Earthquakes center-back Clarence Goodson: "It was great to finally open the account,. We were really on top of [the Los Angeles Galaxy] up until the goal, so I think it was important to get that and put them on their back foot, make them think that maybe it's going to be one of those nights."
