While Floyd Mayweather Jr. prepares for Saul "Canelo" Alvarez this September in the biggest fight of the year, 140-lb. star Amir Khan continues to chirp about facing "Money" May in the future after he's through with Alvarez.
The bravado of Khan is somewhat puzzling, because he has just recently moved his career back into the realm of the relevant. Khan is coming off two wins over less-than-premier fighters Carlos Molina and Julio Diaz. Against Diaz, Khan hit the canvas and nearly found himself a loser by knockout.
The fast-handed British fighter was on a rocket ship rise to the top when he lost a controversial split decision to Lamont Peterson in Washington D.C., Peterson's hometown. During that bout Khan was docked two points for shoving, rarely seen in high-profile prizefights. He wound up losing on two cards by a single point.
In his next fight, Khan was knocked out cold by undefeated Danny Garcia, who is defending his belts against Lucas Matthysse on the undercard of Mayweather -Alvarez.
Should Mayweather emerge the victor from his battle with Canelo, certainly no given when considering Alvarez's knockout power and undefeated record, he is widely expected to face the winner of Garcia-Matthysse. Since Garcia has knocked out Khan, it would appear logical for Mayweather to take him on.
Khan clearly disagrees, claiming his style would make for a perfect bout with "Pretty Boy" Floyd. "Everywhere I've been going people ask me when I'm fighting Floyd," Khan said. Maybe I got knocked out or didn't perform well in some fights, but my style would be exciting to watch against him."
Khan must be careful that he makes it past Alexander first. Alexander boasts a 24-1-0 record with 14 knockouts, and fights a defensively sound style known to frustrate offensively gifted fighters like Khan.
His only loss was to undefeated Timothy Bradley, and he owns wins over Demarcus Corley, Matthysse and Marcos Maidana. Floyd Mayweather Sr., has gone on record predicting Alexander will beat Khan when they square off.
"To be honest, I don't think he [Khan] will win it [Devon Alexander fight]...I think Devon Alexander is going to shut him down."
