While World Wrestling Entertainment may feature matches with staged outcomes, the performers in the ring take real risks. Those risks have bitten WWE superstar Sheamus, who will be out four to six months with a torn labrum, according to WWE.com.
WWE's website reports that Sheamus initially injured the shoulder during the Money in the Bank pay-per-view, in which Sheamus participated in a six-man ladder match with CM Punk, Rob Van Dam, Christian, Randy Orton and Daniel Bryan. Sheamus wrestled with the injury, but aggravated it in the following weeks.
"My mindset heading into Money in the Bank was to risk everything to get that WWE Title contract," Sheamus told WWE.com. "That night I went out there putting it all on the line." Sheamus' injury is believed to have occurred when he was tossed from the top rope to the ringside floor, crashing through ladders on the way down.
At first, it seemed like Sheamus's leg was worse off than his shoulder, having swelled to double its normal size. The shoulder eventually proved more problematic. While WWE toured South Africa, Sheamus said he experienced limitations in shoulder movement and had sharp pains.
WWE ringside physician Chris Amann said, "We performed a specialized MRI with a dye inserted to highlight the structures within the shoulder joint. "Doctor Samson and I both reviewed the film, and it appears that Sheamus has a cartilage [SLAP] tear."
The Celtic said this will be the first time he's undergoing any kind of surgery, but he doesn't believe the injury will hurt his career in the long term.
"To say I'm devastated would be a serious understatement, but I'm determined to take this time to go home to Ireland to see my family, to see my friends, learn a different language, read a lot of books, and come back bigger, stronger and better than ever."
