Pete Rose Advises Alex Rodriguez To Admit Steroid Use, 'Don't Do Like I Did'
Pete Rose, the only living player to be banned from baseball, has some strong advice for disgraced New York Yankees third basemen Alex Rodriguez.
Major League Baseball announced this week it was seeking to suspend Rodriguez for a staggering 211 games in connection with the Biogenesis Clinic investigation but Rodriguez has appealed the decision and is playing, a move not even Rose completely agrees with.
"We have to get these people to understand that if you make mistakes, people will forgive you if you come forward," Rose told USA TODAY Sports. "Don't do like I did. Don't do like (Ryan) Braun did. Don't do like A-Rod did.
“I wish I had come forward a long time ago,” he added. “Some guys came forward, like (Jason) Giambi, like (Andy) Pettitte. And they went on with their lives. They're playing and they're making good money, and there's no shadow upon them right now."
Rose was suspended in 1989 amid revelations he bet on games he managed in 1987 and 1988 while leading the Cincinnati Reds. He has maintained a personal relationship with Rodriguez since the two met in Las Vegas several years ago.
"He's like the rest of us," said Rose. "He's made some major mistakes and he's trying to go on with his life. He's in a tough position, I think, with this appeal and with the lawyers telling him to do this, and do that."
Biogenesis founder Anthony Bosch is cooperating with MLB in their ongoing investigation and has already implicated at least 20 players, including Rodriguez and former National League MVP Ryan Braun, as being individuals he’s provided performance enhancing drugs to.
