NFL Rumors: Nnamdi Asomugha To Be Released By 49ers? May Not Make Roster

San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Dan Hanzus said Sunday that cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha may not make the team's 53-man roster out of training camp.

Reports indicate that Asomugha hasn't had a consistent training camp thus far, and may not make it to the regular season opener against the Green Bay Packers on Sept. 8 at home.

The 6-foot-2 Asomugha signed a one-year deal with San Francisco this past April after two disappointing seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles that saw his once-stellar play decline. In those two years, Asomugha only had four interceptions while constantly being burned by receivers. Philadelphia signed him to a five-year $60 million contract with at least $25 million guaranteed heading into the 2011 season.

After two mediocre seasons and failure to agree to terms on a re-structured contract, the Eagles released Asomugha just as the 2013 NFL season officially began.

San Francisco then signed Asomugha to a one-year deal in which Asomugha can make at most $3 million, showing just how far his star has fallen.

Asomugha, 32, was once compared to the likes of Tama Bay Buccaneer's cornerback Darelle Revis, but now he may not even make the 49ers' roster. Asomugha went to the Pro Bowl for three consecutive years between 2008-10, but it seems as though his glory days may be behind him.

San Francisco enters this year looking to avenge a 34-31 loss in the Super Bowl to the Baltimore Ravens.
