Anna Benson "A Menace To Society," Georgia Presecutors Ask That Kris Benson's Gun-Wielding Ex Wife Remain Jailed Without Bail

Anna Benson is “a menace to society” and should remain behind bars without bail for a gun-wielding attack on her former Major League Baseball husband, a Cobb County prosecutor told a bond-hearing judge earlier this week.

Anna Benson has now been jailed for 24 days on five counts related to home invasion and lawyers for her were seeking to have her released on a bond of $50,000. Judge C. La Tain Kell said he will take a few more days to contemplate before rendering his decision.

According to USA Today Sports, the estranged wife of former big-league pitcher Kris Benson broke into his Marietta, Ga. home on July 7 carrying a weapon she called “the judge” demanding money. During Thursday’s bond hearing, Don Geary, Kris Benson’s lead attorney, described the gun she allegedly was waving about as “not a weapon that wounds but blows holes in things," with shotgun shells that fit into the handgun.

In addition, Anna Benson also faces charges of criminal attempt to commit armed robbery, burglary in the first degree, two counts of aggravated assault, and possession of a weapon during commission of a felony. She could face as much as 20 years in prison on all of the charges.

Geary also told the court of a 1996 episode during which he alleges Anna Benson jumped bail in Tennessee in connection with a murder case where her then boyfriend was ultimately convicted. She was later taken into custody five months later in Oregon.

According to USA Today, Benson was also initially charged in that case, but charges were eventually dropped. On Thursday, she appeared in court in handcuffs and a jail-issued blue jump suit. The newspaper said she only showed emotion when Geary recalled for the court details from her 1996 ordeal.

Attorneys for Anna Benson also pleaded with the court to allow her to be released on bond so she can undergo a thorough psychological exam out of state. They added she needs to be free to appear at an August 22 alimony hearing or risk losing $400,000 to $1.2 million in joint marital funds.
